5/24/2024 – Cotton: Wet, wet, wet! The moisture has met. We need a break to finish planting. It’s getting late quick. I have some that’s just up to some with 5 true leaves. Thrips have not been a big problem this year. Most has grown past thrips stage. Again, we need to get a dry spell to put out post as well. It’s getting wooly in most places. Had about 200 acres get wiped out by hail. Pretty, green and growing one week and the next check Gone!
Soybeans: Anywhere from still in the bag to bloom. We’ll have lots of replant as well. Really need to get a post application on but, Again, it’s been too wet. Haven’t had any insect issues.
Hate to wish the rain away but would sure love to save a few for July.

5/24/2024 – Cotton: Early plantings came to a good stand and are at 4th node at this time. Most of the older cotton has received one thrips dose of Intrepid Edge and got good control. We have had a wet two to three weeks and are lagging behind on weed control. Over the last week we have had some more cotton planted and it is either not up yet or is in the cotyledon stage. It may be that we do not get all of the intended cotton planted.
Rice: Rice is in a similar situation due to the wet weather. We have a lot of older planted rice that has not had herbicide, fertilizer, and flood due to the lack of levee formation. We have had to add some additional fertilizer and some herbicide to some of the fields to hold them until we can get levee construction accomplished. Row rice was easier to stay on time, since there was no levee construction needed. Rice was still being planted this week.
Corn : We got an early planting date, and the corn is excellent. We have been on time with fertilizer and herbicide applications. Some of the corn was treated earlier for stink bugs.
Soybeans: Early soybeans look good, but herbicide applications have been delayed due to wet weather. Beans are still being planted.
Wheat: Crop is maturing and drying down and should be harvested a little earlier this year. Prospects are average.

5/25/2024 – We are in a lot of different stages of growth up here. Thrips are pretty heavy in places, and we are staying on top of them. So far, we have had ample rainfall and temperatures have been warm. A decent start to this season.

5/24/2024 – Cotton- Our cotton is anywhere from just planted to 5th node at this time. We have had a tough time with all the rain so all our crops were planted in stages when it would get dry enough to run. We just finished planting cotton this week. We have not had to treat many fields for thrips at this time, but pressure seemed to be picking up on the cotton that is coming this week. We have been doing weed work where needed.
Corn- Our corn is looking good at this time and ranges from about v9 to v13. We have a little, old stink bug signs, but most plants are growing out of this now. All our fertilizer is out, and corn has a great color. So far, we don’t have any damage from the storms that have come through.
Soybeans- Soybeans range anywhere from not planted to about 7 nodes. Our at-planting herbicides have worked very well, and we are starting to treat fields where weeds are breaking through. We have not seen any other issues in our beans.

5/23/2024 – As May is now almost behind us everything is full swing. Overall, the crops look decent, despite some challenges getting them in the ground in places. A lot of sprayers, disks, and planters ran when the ground was still a little wet, and you can see some compaction patterns especially in the corn.
Corn in our area ranges from v5-6 to v11. We saw good stands established, weed control looks good, and most of the nitrogen went out on time as well. All critical components for good yield potential.
Most of the soybean planting is done, and stands are looking good. We have had a few small areas to replant due to heavy rains. The bulk of our acres are v2 up to v4 right now. Pigweed is going to be a challenge in some fields. With limited dicamba, starting clean and over lapping pre’s is the key, unfortunately that doesn’t happen on every field.
Cotton planting is wrapping up and stands look pretty good so far. Some that was planted in the last few days was going to need a rain to get good stands, and thankfully today it looks like we got rain enough for that. Thrips damage is minimal in most fields for now.
In the sweet potato crop, setting is under way and guys are going as fast as they can. Some that were set the first part of this week(20th-21st) have had a hard time. The humidity was a little low and the wind was tough. Got a rain today and hoping that will turn them around fast. Bug wise it’s calm other than seeing several tortoise beetles. Possibly going to see cutworms soon, if what we saw in the corn last month returns in higher numbers.

5/24/2024 – Cotton- 100% planted, fortunately we missed some rain the last few weeks (in spots) and got a lot planted end of April through first 10 days of May. Ranges from just planted-4th node, mostly being 2-3 nodes. Thrips have picked up within the last 12 days and I’ve treated or lined up to treat a little less than half of my acres. Overall, thrips are at normal levels in my area, and we’ve had great growing conditions, so obviously that helps the situation. What little ThryvOn I have, looks very good at the moment. Cutworms have been more widespread than normal but nothing at treatable levels. Overall weed control has been good. Where we have been treating thrips, we’ve added herbicides as needed and vice versa. Places that got a residual at planting still look really good.
Soybeans- still in the bag-V4. Unfortunately, we stayed wet throughout April, and I have very few April beans, the majority was planted in the first half of May. No insects to speak of at the moment and overall weed control looks excellent. I have a couple places that didn’t receive adequate rainfall to get pre-emerge activated at planting and those acres are about to get treated. Overall, the crop looks good, glad to see some rain this week.
Peanuts- range from 25-30 days old. Dual and Valor went out at planting and weed control still looks great. I have a little bit of ryegrass in spots that didn’t die from tillage before planting but it’s not much to speak of, it’s about to play out anyways. No insects or disease to speak of at the moment.
